Ahhh...vouchers. In Michigan, Proposal 1 threatened to legalize these unethical wastes of taxpayer dollars. Why are they unethical? Simple. Vouchers are checks Uncle Sam gives to parents who want to put their childrun (intentionally misspelled) in a private school. And public money shouldn't fund these kind of expenses.
But then the voucher f##ks said But private schools help chiiilldrun!
What are they looking at, MEAT (making fun of the state test called the MEAP) scores? Those scores are high because only the top of the top get to go there. Even if you have the money, they only admit those who get a high score on the entrance exam they give. As a result, most of these kids who would be helped
by vouchers, who would probably get low scores on this exam, most likely will end up where they started.
This last paragraph is wrong: The reason why private schools have higher test scores is often due to the fact that since private schools are not guaranteed money from the governnment, they must actually WORK for their funding, and they do this by teaching their students as well as they can.
Also, many private schools are run by religious groups. Vouchers would violate the concept of the separation of church and state if they were used to fund these religious schools. Clearly, a voucher proposal would be unconstitutional if it allowed the vouchers to go to religious (church-run) schools.
Worse yet, since these schools are privately owned, they can reject students based on factors such as race, color, religion, etc. And the money reserved for these worthless vouchers would be better spent on improving public schools.
The other problem facing private schools if vouchers are implemented is that by taking government money, these schools may end up being regulated to the point that they are no better than public schools.
On November 7, 2000, the people of Michigan did the right thing and--bye-bye Proposal 1 and the damned vouchers. It was 61 to 39 against the unethical wastes of money.
(Even though I seem to hate vouchers, vouchers that use private money (directly from companies, charities, etc.) are okay. And the kicker: Public schools should be phased out in favor of private ones. Privately-funded vouchers would play a large role in the process. Much of what I said is no longer true in my opinion, but one thing still is: GOVERNMENT VOUCHERS SUCK!)
