Windows XP is the new version of Windows, basically a home version of Windows 2000. And it also brings very bad things along with it, like Smart Tags and the dreaded...ACTIVATION! I'd advise a switch to Linux quickly, as this alone is a dire threat to consumer rights.
According to an article linked to this page, XP testers say that XP needs about a 500MHz processor, 128 megabytes of RAM, and 2 gigabytes of disk space. This basically will force most people using 6-month-old comps to get a memory upgrade, and those with much older models are f##ked and must buy a newer model, at their expense. And when they go to Best Buy, computer prices will be slightly higher, about $15-$60 higher, to pay for the extra RAM required to run XP. This extra RAM and sudden upgrade frenzy may cause chip shortages, which will hurt late adopters who will see much higher prices for RAM, etc. and decide not to buy XP. This, in turn, hurts everyone, even Microsoft.
If M$ releases XP with these, expect a lot of trouble in the form of DoS attacks. The Denial of Service pages from Gibson Research will explain this better.
And there's ACTIVATION. How it works is that you put in one registration code, then you call a M$ number. They give you a longer code, which activates XP. And what happens if your hard drive's heads burrow their way into the platters, or the heads just go out? That's right, you have to get another activation code. What happens if you add more RAM to get that damn XP to run a percent faster, or if you put in a brand new 4X AGP card or a 256-voice sound card? You have to get another code. And you have to pay for that code as well. Basically, M$ just wants more money. And if you don't want to boycott XP, at least wait until they have a crack for the activation codes.
Worse yet, you can just forget about DOS and older Windows applications with XP, since it won't be running any of them! You see, XP has shed all ties with DOS, and it doesn't even have a DOS emulator! This is also a problem for me as well, since all of my software runs on 16-bit DOS. I can recompile most of my stuff to run under Win32, but if they don't even give you a command prompt, ZenonSAR will be worthless to XP users! This is another reason I have no liking for XP.
The most obvious thing to do is boycott XP. Don't buy it, or any computers that come with it. If you buy a computer with XP, install your favorite OS as soon as you turn it on! Then ask M$ for a refund on XP. Another step is to put my banner on your page and link to this page. Tell others to boycott. Pass out flyers. Do anything you want, short of blowing up Billy Boy's car or something nasty like that. Just boycott it!
